Navajo Ceremony

One of Clayton's assistants invited us to a "coming of age" ceremony for her niece. It lasts for several days and is loaded with symbolism. All of the relatives gather for mutton stew, fry bread and together they make a giant cake that gets baked in the ground. That's right, they dig a fire pit take out the hot ashes line the pit with corn husks, pour in the batter and then cover it up with the hot ashes and let it bake all night. While they wait, the medicine man comes and they all sing together in the hogan until the sun rises. There is a ton more but I can't remember it all. We only saw a small part, but it was a beautiful ceremony.

Did you get to try the cake? Those pictures of Quinton and the puppies are just adorable. It's a good thing they were puppies and not kitties.
